About Us

Deep Sea Energy Pty Ltd undertakes project development and delivery of ocean-based renewable energy projects. We cover all types of ocean energy: ocean thermal, current, wave, and tidal.

In collaboration with research institutes and technology companies, Deep Sea Energy undertakes technology transfer and commercialises state-of-the-art technologies.

Deep Sea Energy's current project includes the world's first 100mW commercial ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) project in Sabah, Malaysia; undertaken in collaboration with Isrina Resources (Malaysia) and a Korean research institute.

We are an Australian company based in Sydney, Australia.

Founders

Deep Sea Energy is founded in 2024 by Ivan Chua, Brian Lim and Leo Cooper. The team collectively has 50 years of experience in large-scale energy project delivery, engineering for complex systems, and technology transfer of state-of-the-art technologies from research to industry.

10 years of experience in technology transfer of new technologies from research institutions to the private sector. Ivan previously served as CEO of a medical robotics startup spun out of the University of Sydney, and led business development for the Australian NSW Chief Scientist's innovation network where he represented ten leading universities in Australia.

Brian Lim
Chief Technology Officer and Chief Engineer

10 years of experience in engineering and R&D of complex systems and technologies. Brian previously led a space startup in Silicon Valley which had been developing the world's first miniaturised satellite for hyperspectral imaging. Brian is credited for the development of Australia's space indsutry, and is part of a decade-long effort to develop Australia's first rideshare satellite, which was successfully launched to space in August 2024.

Leo Cooper
Chief Operating Officer

30 years of experience in project management and delivery of large-scale projects in the energy and infrastructure sectors. Leo previously served as the Executive Director for Australia for General Electric (GE) Renewable Energy, where he worked on some of Australia's largest energy and infrastructure projects, spanning from power generation (wind, solar, hydro, hydrogen/ammonia) to power transmission and distribution, and remote site infrastructure.
